This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Thirty Years' War 16181648 Samuel Rawson Gardiner Books

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book on the Thirty Years' War. Samuel R. Gardiner does an excellent job of presenting many of the key events of this destructive war in a very readable chronological (almost like an outline) form. He also gives his point of view as to why certain events were so critical to the future of Europe. The book tends to briefly cover the various important battles of this war. Most of the book focuses on the key personalities of the time period (Ferdinand, Gustavus, Wallenstein, Cardinal Richelieu, etc.) as well as the religious and political aspects of the war. Nevertheless, the book is thoroughly interesting to read if you want to learn more about his crucial period of European history. Samuel Gardiner also has an illustrated version of this book which contains basically the same written content along with some beautiful paintings of key personalities and events from the Thirty Years' War. I highly recommend this book as the first reading material about this war because of its ease in reading and excellent chronological organization. Other books by Friedrich Schiller and by Tryntje Helfferich will provide greater depth of detail about specific events, historical documents and personal accounts of people from that time period. Osprey Publications has many books that will provide in-depth detail on the armies and battles from this war. However, Gardiner gives a solid, well organized overview of the Thirty Years' War that I gladly recommend.

The Thirty Years' War 16181648 Samuel Rawson Gardiner Books Reviews

It's a well written textbook that will give you a bit more than a simple overview of the 30 years war. If you want to know about the period this book would be a good choice.
not well written
Interesting account with focus on the property disputes between the Pope and Dissidents. Does prop belong to church or the parish? The interplay between sovereigns, military commands, alliances and redistribution of property is emphasized rather than ideological disputes. Very good discussion on power and property.
This is an interesting book. Since it's free I didn't look too closely before I ordered it. When I realized that it was written in the late Nineteenth Century (about a war that was then two hundred years old) I was surprised how interesting it is. Good for geeks.
It is an informative piece, but it's like the other ninety-percent of books written on the Thirty Years War.....wrapped up in a mysterious and complex story that just can't be made simple. The one positive of this book is that it has condensed the whole story down and tells each piece in short form.
It's the best reading I've found about the war. Enough detail to see the interplay of politics and religion without minutia to distract the reader from what's the cause and the responses.
This is a very readable history of the Thirty Years War. Reading it stimulates these realizations in post-feudal central Europe, the nation state had not emerged; the various countries had some history on their side but were fragile; the challenge facing each leader was to preserve independence by a combination of alliances and, when necessary, engaging in wars; contemporary national boundaries probably are ephemeral; the core provinces probably embody more intrinsic reality than the current set of nations. This latter point explains why various separatist movements crop up periodically and gives credence to them. Yet, without aggregation into a strong power, each province is vulnerable to an aggressive empire, which can be expected to arise periodically.
