“No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own...across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.”
-HG Wells

When alien starships from a hostile interstellar power arrive in orbit, Britain is one of their first targets. Swiftly, the aliens take control of Britain’s cities and force the remainder of the British military to go on the run. With the government destroyed, the population must choose between fighting and collaborating with the alien overlords. This is truly Britain’s darkest hour.

Caught up in these events are a handful of ordinary people, struggling to survive. The Prime Minister, forced into hiding, and an unscrupulous politician looking to find fame and power by serving the aliens. Soldiers fighting an insurgency and senior officers trying desperately to find the key to driving the aliens away from Earth; police officers faced with a choice between collaboration or watching the aliens brutalise the civilian population. And ordinary citizens, trying to survive a world turned upside down.

But resistance seems futile and the aliens appear unstoppable – and the entire population is caught in the middle. As the alien grip tightens, the last best hope for freedom lies with those who will never surrender...and are prepared to pay any price for the liberation of Earth.

Chris does it again. He has another "invasion of Earth" story (focusing on the England front) where he gives us well-written characters to root for and well-written villains. The actual invasion ends quickly with Earth's militaries beaten and deals with the Resistance movement in England. I consider this a realistic look at how a resistance would fare. There are people willing to continue to fight, other people just trying to live their lives under the alien rule, those who quickly decide to collaborate with the aliens in order to gain power for themselves, those who collaborate with the aliens because the lives of their families are at risk and those who see collaboration as necessary until the time is right to drive the aliens out.

Also, this is the first book of a series so while it ends in an upbeat note, there's more fighting necessary to free the world after this book.

Their Darkest Hour eBook Christopher Nuttall Pacific Crest Publishing Reviews

I found the darkest hour is full with fury, action, suspenseful and brutally violent, this is the story about more then humans vs. Aliens it's also about humans fighting against collaborators who helping the savage aliens,it's also the triumph of the human spirit to overcome aliens now I'm ready for the next chapter of the story I can't wait
Well, as my title states, I'm hooked on another of Nuttall' s series.
Basic premise, no spoilers, Earth is invaded and pretty much beaten. The novel is based in England, at least this novel of the series to come is. The alien have pretty much won, but humanity has not given up.
As I said, no spoilers, but if you like the genre, you'll be soon addicted to Nuttall' s novels as well. Romping good fun.
Impatiently awaiting the next installment. . . .
This is a great book. It interesting and yet written in a way that says...... hey! this could happen. Il be looking forward to the next book.

You just have to read it.

First let me say that I have loved reading Christopher Nuttall's books. Usually the characters are captivating and the story pulls you along anxious for the next step.
The Darkest Hour is not the book expected. The storyline is good but the characters never step off the pages like they do in Christopher's other books. As I read I kept waiting for that sense of anticipation to set in but it was quite lacking. This story is lacking something for me but I cannot point at specifically what it is. I intend to continue reading other books by this author as I have found so many of them captivating!
This book cries out to be made into a movie once the entire series has been completed by Nuttall. The story of an alien invasion of earth illustrated by what happens in the UK has enough action and character development to make most of the stuff that gets passed off as science fiction look like the junk it is when you find the real thing like this book. Note to Syfy - you can fund idiocy like "Sharknado 2" but somehow don't have the bucks to do a decent story like those penned by Nuttall??? If you have never read Nuttall, you are in for a real treat!
I continue to be astonished at the rapid pace that Nuttall produces books. You would think with such a frenetic output they would be formulaic mini-clones. Not at all. The series differ enough from each other to be both interesting and filled with novel takes on things. I am old enough to have been an SF reader during the 50's and 60's and avidly read the masters. These books are always at least their equals and sometimes exceeds the stories of yore in depth, complexity and entertainment value. The only problem I have is reading them fast enough to see what happens next. Their Darkest Hour is a great example of an good book that you will enjoy and be anxious to continue reading. Unfortunately, the next book in the series s not yet on the horizon.
Quite possibly one of the best Alien Invasion books I've read in a good long while. It's right up there with other invasion stories like Footfall by Larry Niven. Throughout the book, the soldiers, policemen, doctors, Prime Minister, and other characters compare their experiences either in fighting in other countries or from what they've only read about in history books. Without knowing why the aliens invaded, or any other information about the enemy, the humans have to use every trick ever developed to resist aliens who have, in only two days time, virtually conquered the entire planet.

The first third of the book deals with the many regrets the soldiers and the leaders have for not preparing for the confrontation and how well a prepared enemy could utterly destroy everything. The middle portion deals with how utterly difficult it is to fight off a conquer who doesn't "play" by your rules of warfare. After all, the aliens don't care about humans. We're slaves. A few thousand more dead don't matter to them, so long as the bodies don't block the roads. The last part of the book I won't comment on. I'll only say that everything is brilliantly portrayed.
